A Low Mileage ’78 Camaro Introduces Father and Son to the Drag-and-Drive Community, and Hopefully an Edelbrock Sick 66 Appearance
After his racing experience was limited to only circle tracks, it took Roger Morrison’s son to open his eyes to the fun of driving a classic car, as well as racing in a straight line instead of in circles.
“I grew up at circle tracks in my younger days,” said Roger. “This will be my first chapter trying to go straight line fast.”

Second-generation Camaro models continue to increase in popularity and price, and at one time this 1978 Z/28 model was a 41,000-mile matching numbers car, with some period correct Cragar aftermarket wheels.
But the introduction to the drag-and-drive way of life changed that in short order. “We did the route/week of 2023 Hot Rod Drag Week on the Drag Pack,” said Roger. “And we attended South Georgia Motorsports Park Day of the first Sick Week, so this is all your fault.”
Since that first visit, the Camaro has seen some changes. Gone is the wheezy original small block, and a 427 cubic inch naturally aspirated small block took up residence in the engine bay. The transmission was also given matching orders, as a TKX 5-speed manual transmission took its place.
Why the sudden changes to a low-mileage Camaro? “Drag-and-drive combines everything I love about classic cars and racing,” Roger admitted. “I love to road trip driving the country in my hot rod, and the competition plus endurance testing to go with it sounds perfect. The things I’ve witnessed and read about the group helping each other and coming together for the greater good speaks volumes to me.”
Roger has one focus for 2024: Edelbrock Sick 66. “If we can get it together earlier, Hot Rod Drag Week and some local events would be in the mix,” he mentioned. “Always wanted to drive Route 66 in my hot rod; to have a drag and drive event with a group of friends and competitors sounds like a dream come true.”
