We officially past the halfway point of Edelbrock Sick 66 as the tour rolled into Amarillo Dragway in Texas on Tuesday. A trio of track dates was joined by a near 300-mile drive day on day four (Monday, October 14th), and with just over 700 miles traveled by almost all the competitors, it was time to see who could continue to attack the track for some good numbers and a chance at the overall top spot.

We hit the halfway point on racing activities when Robert Voss made the final pass down Tulsa Raceway Park’s surface during day three of Edelbrock Sick 66. Racers had now traveled over 250 miles between three race tracks, and we set our course for Texas and Amarillo Dragway on the first of two drive days. Could everyone survive the first extended travel day and the original Route 66 for nearly 300 miles?

We’re nearing the halfway point of Edelbrock Sick 66, a drag-and-drive based around using as much of Route 66, a road that’s been use for nearly a hundred years. Some amazing checkpoints, as well as some tight racing in the three track visits, have marked this ‘one-time-only’ event. As we concluded day three’s racing activities and drive to Edmond, Oklahoma, some changes are afoot in the top ten, as well as facing the first serious driving day on Monday, October 14th. 

After a day of tech, registration and testing, it was time to get down to business at Ozark Raceway Park on Friday, October 11th for day one of Edelbrock Sick 66.

177 rides completed step one to enter competition at Ozark; who would emerge the leader, who could challenge that leader, and who would face the dreaded Did Not Finish (DNF) list after one day of abuse?

It's tech and testing day at Edelbrock Sick 66 - lot of checkmarks, testing and figuring out last minute details can make or break the last night of normalcy before the time slips count. The Sick 66 event, the first time a drag-and-drive will follow Route 66 as the majority of the drive, got underway yesterday at Ozark Raceway Park in Missouri.

Route 66 is legendary, and our second track that Sick the Magazine will visit for the Edelbrock Sick 66 event, Mo-Kan Dragway, will add a chapter to their legendary history when the drag-and-drive event stops in Asbury, bringing 300 of the quickest street-legal cars and trucks, as well as Sick Ward participants!

With a history of running competitive heads-up radial racing, Lamar Swindoll Jr. is used to the pressure that can come with producing repeatable performance and getting to the finish line on time. After producing mid 8-second elapsed times on both Sick Week and Sick Summer, Lamar decided it was time to turn up the wick for next month’s Edelbrock Sick 66.

For Rick and Jacki Steinke, they’ve been around the drag-and-drive scene for quite a while, and although both have done well behind the wheel, Rick’s 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle 4-door is the more well-known ride.

The Chevelle has been absent from the drag-and-drive scene in 2024, but the classic Chevy known as ‘Honk If Parts Fall Off’ will be hunting for a top spot on the upcoming Edelbrock Sick 66 event next month.

For many that strive to attend a drag-and-drive event, you can sometimes hit a wall where you realize that attending that year might not be in the card. Some might have a back-up plan, or in rare case, multiple options.

For Jody Ames, the 2024 edition of Hot Rod Drag Week marks the first time he is able to take his original ‘Plan A’ car, a 2016 Ford Mustang.

For Alexis Zarate, she’ll embark on her first drag-and-drive, something she’s wanted to do for nearly a decade, at the Edelbrock Sick 66 this October.

The 26 year-old mother of two got her introduction to cars through her father, as well as the ’69 Camaro she currently navigates. “My dad bought the car at age 17, and gave it to me when I was a year old."

The trophy matters. It can be a standard award store trophy, or a 6-foot-tall check, but the cool thing is you get to have something to recall the experience and the memories. The money comes and goes, but the awards, trophies, memories and friendships are what to reflect on.

This ‘78 Camaro model might only have 41,000 original miles, but a few drag-and-drive events has spurred the owner to make changes for an upcoming appearance at Edelbrock Sick 66.
