World’s Fastest Convertible Chases Sick Summer Win
The world’s fastest convertible will be one of the stars of Motion Raceworks Sick Summer, where the quickest and fastest street legal cars in America will battle across five days of racing at four drag strips throughout the Midwest.
South Carolina’s Devin Vanderhoof owns the unique 1993 Ford Mustang, which is capable of reaching speeds of over 230mph in a touch over six-seconds. The car finished second overall at Sick Week 2025 Presented By Gear Vendors Overdrive earlier this year and also finished second in a Sick Summer appearance in 2023.
It’s a long way from the Southeast to the Midwest, but for Devin and his team driver Josh Davis, it’s a mission made easier by the joy that Motion Raceworks Sick Summer brings to them. From the lush country roads to the passionate support of race fans, Sick Summer is quite literally Devin’s summer vacation.
“The first year Sick Summer was held we thought we would check it out, and I had more fun than I have had for a long time at a race event,” he said. “We finished second overall that year but the coolest part was the small towns and the people of the Midwest. We were at Great Lakes Dragaway at 9am on a weekday morning and the track was at capacity — you don’t get that anywhere else.
“There was no part of Sick Summer when I wanted to go home. I wanted it to keep going. I mean, we were driving between tracks and there was a kid at a stop sign handing out water bottles to everybody. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’”
While Devin and Josh will be doing the event the hard way in one of the nation’s quickest street cars, their wives will be along for the ride in the Summit Racing Equipment Sick Ward Presented By PEAK Performance. This VIP spectator experience is a great way for people to be a part of Motion Raceworks Sick Summer without having to go down the drag strip.
“Josh and I hyped this event so much that now both of our wives are coming,” Devin laughed. “They’ve rented a cool Jeep and have a whole list of places they want to visit along the way.”
Fast as Devin’s Mustang might be, it’s a cool cruiser itself thanks to a canvas soft top. Having the world’s quickest convertible is certainly a statement, though Devin sometimes doubts the practicality of the idea.
“We might just be the only ones dumb enough,” he joked. “We have to put a new top on it every year because it stretches so bad with the speed and we’ve had a lot of issues with the windows. We recently replaced the side windows with Lexan which are now latched to the chassis, something that also saved us more weight.”
Devin would like nothing more than to take home overall honors for Motion Raceworks Sick Summer, a title well within his capability. He believes that he could even better his Sick Week average of 6.577, which was a new personal best.
“We’ve tested and raced at Street Car Bragging Rights, getting some experience on hot tracks which will help us out at Sick Summer for sure,” he said. “We’ve made some chassis changes and a stator change since Sick Week and we hope having a looser torque convertor will help us with those track conditions too.”
Devin will be joined by over 300 other racers at Motion Raceworks Sick Summer, which will visit Byron Dragway, Great Lakes Dragaway, Cordova Dragway and Tri-State Raceway. Discount online tickets and event information are available here.
