Mikael Borggren’s 6-Second Volvo Destroyed in No Prep Accident at Lapeer International Dragway

Mikael Borggren and his unique Volvo station wagon has scooped up several events wins, some top three finishes in drag-and-drive events, and even collected the Small Tire class title at Roadkill Nights three times.

But the storied Volvo was destroyed during a no-prep event yesterday at Lapeer International Dragway.

It’s a once in-a-lifetime drag-and-drive: Edelbrock Sick 66, starting THIS WEEK - October 10th-18th 2024. It checks all the boxes: Route 66, over 30 checkpoints, 6 tracks. Don’t miss your chance to run Route 66 and see the track action! General info, Sick Ward, discounted spectator tickets available HERE!

The 1987 Volvo wagon became a staple on several drag-and-drive events, first cracking the 6-second mark at Hot Rod Drag Week in 2021.

Combined with winning the Modified Power-Adder class with a 7.25 average that year, a lot of eyeballs were on Mikael and the wagon opposite Rick Prospero during the first Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive in 2022.

The two battling hard all week, and although Mikael finished the week with a trio of 6-second runs and a 6.91 average, Rick held him off with a 6.87 average from his RX-7.

We saw Mikael at a few more drag-and-drive events, but he started to make his mark in the no-prep world, and also captured his first Roadkill Nights Small Tire victory in 2022.

The Volvo would deliver another pair of victories at the annual event, as well as start to collect victories at numerous no-prep events, no doubt thanks to the ACE Racing Engines LS single turbo powerplant.

Unfortunately, it looks as if the Volvo may have made its last pass this weekend, as the car sustained heavy damage at an event at Lapeer. Running alongside a Fox Mustang, both cars got loose off the starting line, but the Mustang driver lost control and crashed into Mikael’s Volvo, causing it to flip several times. “It sucked getting T-boned like that,” said Mikael. “I’m banged up, but decent.”

As far as what the future holds, Mikael is hopefully, but realistic. “I’m going to try to regroup and see what is possible to do,” he said. “It was all my personal savings into that car, so I don’t have anything left in any drawer to build anything else for at this point.”

Several of Mikael’s friends are trying to help him out, so while it may not be the last we hear about Mikael Borggren’s racing efforts, it could be the final chapter for the Volvo wagon.
