Dunphy Makes Drag And Drive History

History was made on day five of Hot Rod Drag Week 2025 as Ned Dunphy claimed the world record for the quickest overall drag-and-drive average.

The previous record of 6.1918 seconds was held by Jeff Lutz, set nine years ago at Hot Rod Drag Week 2016. Dunphy’s SMX-powered Dodge Viper has threatened to be a challenger to the record since its debut in 2023. Things finally clicked this year as Dunphy enjoyed a relatively smooth week.

Arriving into the final day at Maryland International Dragway, the math revealed Dunphy needed to run quicker than 6.284 seconds to claim the record. His first pass was afflicted by tire shake, but he returned with a new set of slicks for a 6.217 pass, enough to produce a 6.178 average.

Dunphy was not content to settle and returned for a third run, hitting a 6.203, enough to marginally drop the average to a 6.175 for the final record number.

The battle for the overall podium places played out across the day. Steve Spiess had a day to forget, with staging issues and a good ET lost because of a reaction time above one second. Bryant Goldstone struggled to get any boost to his motor and eventually settled for a 6.705 (6.604A) to take second. Will Fair surprised with a charging 6.523 (6.886A) to clinch a place on the podium.

David Armentrout took the Ultimate Iron win with a 7.025 average, capitalizing on Spiess’s problems.

Nick Rinehart wrapped up Pro Street with a 7.183 average, while Scott Glassbrook’s four-cylinder took out Modified with an 8.406 average. Pro Street NA ended in Scott Miller’s hands with a 7.969 average.

All Motor Small Block star Glen Sheeley closed out his week with an 8.421 (8.371A) , a new world drag-and-drive record for naturally aspirated small blocks.

All Motor Big Block honors went to Philip Tobin, who stayed unchallenged for most of the week in his Corvette.

Super Street Big Block was a battle between just two drivers by the end of the week, won by Sean Lemire with an 8.762 average. Super Street Small Block was taken by Chris Welch on a 7.967 average.

Street Race Small Block Power Adder hero Rick Steinke was a virtual lock for the win, the only question was how low he could take the average. The answer was an 8.5048, tying the all-time Stret Race record held by Dustin Trance. Steinke was 8.50X on every single day of the week!

We will be breaking down the remainder of the classes as we update this story in coming hours…
